A mild tingle from the steam wand or the drip tray is easy to shrug off. It should not be. It means current is reaching the metal body of the machine, usually from a heating element whose insulation has broken down or a wire chafed against the frame. On a grounded outlet, that fault trips a breaker. On an old ungrounded outlet, the body can stay live and wait for the next touch.
The Old Quad near the university has early-1900s bungalows, the central neighborhoods in 95051 are mid-century ranch, and Rivermark up by 101 is newer townhomes and condos. We collect the machine from any of them, test its insulation and grounding on our bench, and quote the repair in writing. Please stop using it until then.

Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Tingle from the wand, tray or frame. We measure insulation resistance on each element and check every wire that runs near the metal frame. Once the leaking part is replaced, we confirm the ground connection inside the machine is intact before it heats again.
- Ground wire loose or corroded inside the case. The ground runs from the cord to the frame and the boilers. A loose or corroded connection leaves the body unprotected even on a good outlet. We clean and retighten each ground point and test continuity from the plug to the boiler.
- Cord and plug scorched at the wall. A heavy heating load through a worn plug or a loose outlet can scorch the plug blades and the cord. We replace the cord set on the machine and tell you if the outlet itself looked damaged.

FAQ
ECM in Santa Clara questions, answered.
-
Our Old Quad bungalow still has two-prong outlets. Can we run the ECM on an adapter?
We advise against it. An adapter grounds nothing unless the outlet box itself is grounded, and in older wiring it often is not. Have an electrician fit a grounded outlet for the machine. If you have already felt a tingle, send the machine in before using it again. -
Is a tingle dangerous if it is only faint?
Yes. A faint tingle means insulation has already failed somewhere, and heat and moisture can make it worse. Unplug the machine and keep wet hands off it. A machine with a leaking element belongs on the bench. -
The outlet in our Rivermark kitchen has a reset button. Does that protect the machine?
That is a GFCI outlet. It protects people by cutting power when current leaks to ground, so if it trips as the ECM heats, take it seriously and never bypass it. Try the machine on another GFCI outlet. If it trips there too, the machine has a fault. -
What does the ECM pickup deposit cover?
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. -
How long does ECM bench repair take?
Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. -
What warranty applies to ECM coffee-machine repair?
6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
