ECM in El Cerrito
ECM in El Cerrito kitchens.
When shots go wrong, the grinder and the beans are the first suspects, and often they are guilty. The machine has its own faults that look the same in the cup: a clogged shower screen that sprays water to one side of the puck, brew pressure set far above what the coffee needs, or a group running at the wrong temperature. Changing the grind will not fix any of them.
An ECM from a ranch house up toward Wildcat Canyon and one from a stucco bungalow in the flats go through the same bench test. We collect the machine, check the spray pattern at the group, measure brew pressure with a gauge in the portafilter, and log group temperature over several shots. Before we touch anything, you get a written quote.

Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Shower screen spraying unevenly across the puck. Oils and fines build up behind the screen until some holes stop passing water. The puck gets soaked on one side and channels on the other. We remove the screen and the parts behind it, clean or replace them, and check the flow pattern with the portafilter out.
- Brew pressure set higher than the coffee needs. Brew pressure is set at an expansion valve, or on a rotary pump at the pump itself. Set high, it makes a light roast harsh and quick to channel. We measure the pressure at the group, adjust the part that controls it, and write the new setting on the quote.
- Shots that taste different from one day to the next. If grind and dose are steady and the taste still swings, look at temperature. A heat-exchanger machine drifts with how long it has sat idle, and a failing sensor or pressure switch makes that drift worse. We log temperature across a run of shots and fix the part that lets it wander.

FAQ
ECM in El Cerrito questions, answered.
-
How can we tell whether the machine or the grinder is the problem?
Run the group for a few seconds with the portafilter out and watch the water. It should fall as an even shower across the whole screen. Spray to one side or a thin stream in the middle points at the machine. If the shower looks right, start with the grinder and the beans. -
Can you set our ECM to a lower brew pressure for light roasts?
Yes, on most machines. We measure pressure at the group with a gauge in the portafilter, then adjust the valve or pump that sets it. Tell us the pressure you want when you book, and it gets set while the machine is on the bench. -
Should we clean the shower screen ourselves between services?
Yes. Wipe the screen and the gasket area after the last shot of the day, and take the screen off for a soak now and then if your model allows it. Use a brush made for the group, not a knife or a screwdriver, which scratches the metal and the gasket seat. -
What does the ECM pickup deposit cover?
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. -
How long does ECM bench repair take?
Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. -
What warranty applies to ECM coffee-machine repair?
6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
