ECM in Portola Valley
ECM in Portola Valley kitchens.
Out toward Skyline, a fair number of Portola Valley properties draw from a well rather than a municipal line. Well water can carry more minerals and fine sediment than treated supply, and an ECM takes all of it into its tank and boilers. Grit settles on the tank intake and in the valves. Minerals coat the heating element and the level probe, and the machine begins to fill, heat or steam unevenly.
We collect machines anywhere in 94028, from the custom homes on wooded acreage to the mid-century houses near the Ladera edge. On our bench we check the intake screen, the fill path and the inside of the boiler, then write a quote that separates cleaning from parts. No repair starts until you sign off on it.
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Grit blocking the tank intake and fill valve. Fine sediment collects on the intake screen and can hold the fill valve open or keep it from opening. The pump then runs dry, or the boiler overfills. We clean the intake, open up the valve, replace its seal if the grit has scored it, and flush the lines.
- Mineral crust on the level probe. A thin crust on the probe changes how the machine reads the boiler level. It either floods the boiler or cuts the heat to protect an element it thinks is dry. We clean or replace the probe and watch several complete fill cycles before the machine goes home.
- Heating element slowed by mineral buildup. Scale on the element works like insulation, so warm-up stretches out and steam recovers slowly between drinks. We measure the element, look inside the boiler, and quote a descale, a new element or both, depending on what the bench shows.

FAQ
ECM in Portola Valley questions, answered.
-
Our house is on a well. What water should go into the ECM tank?
Not raw well water if you can avoid it. Use filtered water with a moderate mineral content, or run it through a filter made for espresso machines and change the cartridge on schedule. Fully distilled water is no better, because some level sensors need a trace of minerals to work. -
The power went out during a PG&E shutoff while the machine was on. Should we worry?
Usually not. An ECM that loses power simply starts heating again when it returns. Watch that first warm-up. If the breaker trips, an error appears, or the machine clicks without heating, switch it off and send it in, since a relay or controller can fail on a rough restart. -
Does sediment damage the pump itself?
Over time it wears a vibration pump and scratches the seals in the valves downstream. The bigger risk is a blocked intake, which lets the pump run with no water. A clean tank and an intake screen checked every few months prevent most of it. -
What does the ECM pickup deposit cover?
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. -
How long does ECM bench repair take?
Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. -
What warranty applies to ECM coffee-machine repair?
6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
