A heat-exchanger ECM keeps its group hot by circulating boiler-heated water through two pipes, a loop that runs by itself as the water warms. When scale narrows that loop or the restrictor inside it, the group stays lukewarm even with the boiler at full pressure. The first shots of the day run sour and thin, and a long flush only makes it worse. On a cool marine-layer morning, a cold group is easy to blame on the weather.
We collect machines anywhere in 94066, from the 1940s to 1960s houses in the flats around Tanforan to the homes in Crestmoor and Rollingwood toward Skyline. On our bench we measure the group temperature against the boiler, open the loop, and quote the cleaning or parts in writing before anything is done.

Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Group head that never comes fully up to temperature. If the group stays cool to the touch after a long warm-up, water is not circulating through the loop. We check the restrictor and both pipes for scale, clear them, and time how long the group takes to settle once circulation returns.
- Boiler pressure set too low for the group. On a heat-exchanger machine, the boiler pressure setting also decides how hot the brew water gets. A pressure control that drifts low leaves the group cool and the steam weak together. We test it against a gauge and reset or replace it.
- Flakes from an old descale lodged in the loop. Scale loosened by a descale can settle at the lowest point of the loop and block it. We flush the heat exchanger and the circulation pipes, remove what has settled, and run the machine through several full heat cycles.

FAQ
ECM in San Bruno questions, answered.
-
Why is our first shot sour even after the machine has been on for an hour?
An hour is plenty for a healthy group to heat. A group that still feels cool after that points to poor circulation in the loop or a boiler set too low. Check whether the steam feels as strong as usual. If both are weak, the pressure control is the likely cause. -
Should we flush before every shot, like the guides online say?
On a machine that circulates properly, a short flush cools water that has sat too long in the exchanger. On a machine whose group runs cold, flushing pulls in even cooler water and makes the shot worse. If flushing never helps, the loop needs attention. -
Can we touch the group to check its temperature?
Only briefly, near the top, since a healthy group gets too hot to hold. A group you can rest your hand on after a full warm-up is a sign something is wrong. A thermometer made for the group is a safer check. -
