ECM in Foster City

The water you pour into an ECM matters as much as the machine. Tap water brings scale. Distilled or reverse-osmosis water brings a different problem: on machines with an automatic boiler fill, the level probe senses water through its conductivity, and very pure water barely conducts. The probe can miss the water level, so the pump keeps filling or the machine stops with a fill fault. Filtered water with some mineral left in it suits the machine best.
Most homes in Foster City are condos, townhomes and HOA-managed buildings, so a pickup often goes through building management. Share the building rules when you book. On our bench the machine runs on ordinary water first, then, if the fault looks tied to water, on the kind you use at home. The written quote names the fault, and we wait for your approval.

Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Boiler overfilling after a switch to distilled water. When the probe cannot sense very pure water, it keeps calling for more, and the boiler fills until water comes out of the steam wand. We drain and refill the boiler, clean the probe, and advise on water with enough mineral content for the probe to read.
- Fill fault or blinking lights after a tank refill. The controller gives the pump a set time to fill the boiler. If the pump runs dry, pulls air through a loose tank hose, or cannot push past a sticking fill valve, that time runs out and heating stops. We trace which of the three it is and repair that part.
- Scale on the level probe giving false readings. Scale on the probe insulates it, and the controller reads the boiler level wrong. We pull the probe, clean or replace it, and inspect the boiler for the scale that would coat a new one.

FAQ
ECM in Foster City questions, answered.
-
Is bottled or distilled water safe for our ECM?
Plain distilled or reverse-osmosis water can confuse the fill probe on machines that fill automatically, and very pure water is hard on metal parts over time. Filtered tap water or a bottled water with a modest mineral content is the safer choice. Ask us for a water suggestion when the machine goes back. -
Our building needs an elevator reservation for anything moved through it. How do we set up the pickup?
Reserve the elevator or the loading time with management, then give us that window when you book. Have the machine cool, with the tank and drip tray empty, and we handle it from there. -
What kind of filter should we use in the tank?
A softening cartridge made for espresso machine tanks cuts scale without stripping the water entirely. Change it as often as its maker says for the amount of water you use. A pitcher filter helps with taste but does far less for scale. -
What does the ECM pickup deposit cover?
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. -
How long does ECM bench repair take?
Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. -
What warranty applies to ECM coffee-machine repair?
6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
