Water went into the case when we refilled the tank. What should we do?

Unplug the machine at the wall, not just at its switch. Do not power it up again to see whether it still works. Let it sit, and book a pickup so the electronics can be dried and checked on the bench before the machine is switched on again.

Inside an ECM, the controller, relays and wiring share a small case with a tank, a boiler and a lot of hot water. A tank topped up without lifting it out, a drip tray that overflows, or a steam wand wiped off over the machine can all send water where it should not go. The machine may keep running for a while. Then the display flickers, a relay chatters, or it will not power on the next morning.

Dublin kitchens are mostly post-2000 builds, and counter outlets in a kitchen of that age are GFCI protected, so a wet machine will often trip the outlet before it does more harm. If that happens, unplug it and leave it alone. We pick the machine up, dry and inspect the electronics on our bench, and test the controller and relays under load. What we repair on the bench.

Display flickering or blank after a spill. Water on the control board leaves mineral tracks that keep conducting after the board dries. We take the board out, inspect it under strong light, clean the contacts and connectors, and test it back in the machine. A board with burned traces gets replaced, and the quote says so.
Relay clicking without the heat coming on. A heating relay that has taken water, or years of switching, can click and still pass no current. We measure its output under load, replace it if it fails, and test the element and its cutout at the same time so the fault is not simply moved along.
Timer or smart plug that stopped starting the machine. Some owners run the ECM from a timer or smart plug so it is warm in the morning. A plug not rated for the full heating current runs hot and fails at its contacts, and the machine takes the blame. We test the machine on a direct outlet first, then check the cord ends for heat damage.
