Descaling at home looks simple: pour in the solution, run it through, rinse. On a machine with a boiler and a heat exchanger it is less forgiving. Acid loosens scale in flakes, and the flakes travel. They lodge in the fill valve, around the level probe, on the steam valve seat or in the small jet feeding the group. The machine that comes out of the descale may leak, overfill or refuse to heat.
We collect ECM machines across 94070, from the tract homes in White Oaks and Devonshire to the remodeled houses west of El Camino and the apartments near downtown. On our bench we trace where the loosened scale went, flush it out, and replace any seal the acid has softened. Nothing changes on the machine until you approve the written quote.
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Fill valve held open by a scale flake. A flake caught in the fill valve lets water keep running into the boiler. The steam turns wet, the tank drains quickly and the safety valve may spit. We open the valve, remove the debris, replace the seal and test several fill cycles.
- Leaks that started the day after descaling. Descaler left in the machine too long can attack seals and dry out gaskets, and a weep appears at a fitting or valve soon after. We find each wet spot with the machine hot, replace the damaged seals and rinse the whole water path thoroughly.
- Steam valve that grinds or will not seal. Hard grit on the valve seat scratches it each time the knob turns. The valve then drips when closed or needs force to shut. We clean the seat, replace it if it is scored, and fit new seals.

FAQ
ECM in San Carlos questions, answered.
-
Our ECM started leaking right after we descaled it. Did we break it?
Probably not for good. Loosened scale and a softened seal are the usual causes, and both can be repaired. Switch the machine off, empty it and skip any further descaling. Send it in with the name of the product you used and how long it sat in the machine. -
Which descaler is safe for an ECM?
Follow the manual for your model. On many boiler machines a full descale is bench work rather than a home job, because of the flakes. A filter in the tank and softer water do more to prevent scale than any descaler. When the boiler needs it, a bench descale with the parts opened is the safer route. -
Can you check whether our machine needs a descale before we try one?
Yes. With the covers off we look at the element and the boiler walls, and we check the fill and steam valves for deposits. If the scale is light, a rinse and a new filter are enough. If it is heavy, the written quote covers a bench descale. -
What does the ECM pickup deposit cover?
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. -
How long does ECM bench repair take?
Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. -
What warranty applies to ECM coffee-machine repair?
6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
