With soft to moderate water, do we still need to descale?

Less often, but yes. EBMUD water still leaves minerals behind every time water boils off. We can tell you what we found inside when the machine is on the bench and suggest an interval.

Is a buzzing pump something we can keep using?

A buzz is normal for a vibration pump. A louder buzz with thin shots or a sputtering wand is not. Keep using it and the pump can run dry and overheat. It is better to stop and send it in.

What we repair on the bench.

Vibration pump buzzing without much flow. A vibration pump that gets loud but moves little water has usually worn internally or is pulling air from a cracked intake hose. We check the tank connection and hose first, measure pump output, and replace the pump only if it cannot hold pressure.
Group gasket baked hard. An ECM group stays hot for hours, and the gasket against it slowly hardens. The portafilter needs to swing further to lock, and water may escape around the rim. We replace the gasket and shower screen and clean the group.
Hot water valve dripping into the tray. The hot water tap has its own valve and seals, and a worn seal lets it drip whenever the boiler is up to pressure. We rebuild the valve with new seals and check that it closes cleanly.
