ECM in Oakland
ECM in Oakland kitchens.
Oakland ECM owners live in every kind of building, from a 1910s Rockridge house to an Adams Point apartment or a steep Montclair lot with a long stair to the door. A dual-boiler ECM is heavy, and getting it to a bench in one piece is part of the repair. We carry it out drained and cool, pad it for the ride and bring it back the same way.
On the bench the machine gets a long run before anyone opens it. We pull shots, steam, let it idle and bring it up again, since the group, valves and seals on an ECM often misbehave only when hot. Once the fault repeats, you get a written quote with one total price for the repair, and we start after you say yes.
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Group keeps dripping after the lever is down. The brew lever works a cam against small valves inside the group, each with its own seal. When those seals wear or scale builds on the seats, water keeps running into the tray after the shot. We strip the group, replace the worn seals and springs, and grease the cam before testing.
- Steam that comes out wet or weak. Wet steam usually means an overfilled boiler, from a coated level probe or a fill valve that lets water past. Weak steam points to low boiler pressure. We check the fill level, the pressure control and the element, and repair the one that is off.
- Hot-water tap that will not stop dripping. The hot-water valve wears the same way the steam valve does. A slow drip at the spout drains boiler water and keeps the autofill cycling. We rebuild the valve with new seals and hold it closed under full pressure to test it.

FAQ
ECM in Oakland questions, answered.
-
Our Montclair house has a long stair up from the street. Is that a problem for pickup?
No. Mention the stairs when you book so we plan the carry. The machine should be off and cool, with the tank and drip tray empty. We return it to the same counter. -
Our 1920s house in Crocker Highlands trips a breaker when the ECM heats. Is it the machine?
Maybe not. Older kitchen circuits often carry the fridge or a toaster too, and an ECM pulls hard while heating. If it trips only with other things running, look at the circuit. If it trips alone, or the moment the element comes on, we test the element and wiring on the bench. -
The portafilter handle now swings past center before it seals. What wore out?
Most likely the group gasket. Heat hardens it and it stops giving, so the handle travels further to seal. A new gasket and shower screen bring the handle back to its normal position and stop the spray around the rim. -
What does the ECM pickup deposit cover?
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. -
How long does ECM bench repair take?

What warranty applies to ECM coffee-machine repair?
6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
