ECM in Hayward
ECM in Hayward kitchens.
On a heat-exchanger ECM with a pressure switch, brew temperature follows steam boiler pressure. The switch turns the element on and off around a set pressure, and the water passing through the heat exchanger picks up heat from that boiler. Set it high and shots run hot and bitter. Set it low, or let the switch drift, and shots run sour while the steam goes weak too. The boiler gauge is the first thing to read.
An ECM from a 1950s house in the Fairway Park or Mt Eden flats and one from a newer home in the Hayward Hills get the same test. We pick the machine up, log boiler pressure and group temperature over a series of shots on our bench, and send a written quote. No setting is changed and no part replaced until you approve it.
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Shots turning sour while the steam goes weak. Both point to low boiler pressure. We check the gauge against a reference, run the pressure switch through several cycles, and look for a scaled element that heats slowly. If the switch cuts out below its setting, we clean or replace it and set it where you want it.
- Bitter shots and a group that hisses. When the boiler runs above its usual pressure, water in the heat exchanger overheats and flashes to steam at the group. We lower the setting, check that the switch is not sticking closed, and confirm the safety valve still opens where it should.
- Steam boiler slow to reach pressure from cold. A scaled element, or one fed through a tired connector, heats slowly, and the machine takes far longer than usual to come up. We measure the element's resistance and current draw, inspect the connectors, and descale the boiler if scale is insulating the element.

FAQ
ECM in Hayward questions, answered.
-
Can we adjust the pressure switch ourselves to make shots hotter?
We do not recommend it. The switch sits behind the panels next to live terminals, and a small turn moves the temperature a lot. Tell us the taste you are after, and we set it on the bench and note the setting so you know what changed. -
What should the boiler gauge read on a heat-exchanger ECM?
It should cycle within a narrow band, rising while the element heats and falling back before the switch turns it on again. Your manual gives the range for your model. A needle that sits well outside that band, or never moves, is worth a bench check. -
Our shots are fine on weekdays but go bitter when we make drinks for guests. Why?
Back-to-back milk drinks pull boiler pressure down, and the element works hard to recover, sometimes overshooting. On a heat-exchanger machine, a short flush before each shot brings the group back to a steady temperature. If it still runs bitter, the switch setting is the next thing to check. -
What does the ECM pickup deposit cover?
