ECM in Belmont

ECM in Belmont kitchens.

Belmont is nearly all homes. Older ranch and split-level houses sit on the flatter side, condos and rentals fill parts of the flats along Ralston Avenue, and newer construction climbs the slope higher up. When the pump side of an ECM starts to go in any of those kitchens, it tells you by sound and by the gauge. The shot slows, the buzz turns rough, or the brew needle climbs more slowly than it used to.

Vibration pumps wear, and one that ran dry after the tank emptied can lose output for good. Rotary pumps last longer, but their motors and couplings wear too. We pick the machine up, measure flow and pressure on the bench, and quote the pump or valve that is really at fault. Work starts only after you approve that written quote.

$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.

Common repairs we do

What we repair on the bench.

  • Vibration pump louder and weaker than it used to be. A tired vibration pump still hums but pushes less water, so the gauge struggles to reach brew pressure and shots run thin. We measure pump output against the expansion valve setting, replace the pump if it is the cause, and set the valve so the group sees the right pressure.
  • Brew gauge running well past the normal range. If the needle climbs far above the usual brew pressure during a shot, the expansion valve is set too high or stuck with scale. We clean or replace the valve, set it again, and watch the gauge through a series of shots before we sign off.
  • Rotary pump that groans at start. On rotary pump ECMs, a pump head stiff with scale or a worn coupling makes the motor labor when it starts. We separate the motor from the pump head, test each one, and replace the part that failed instead of the whole assembly.

FAQ

ECM in Belmont questions, answered.

  • The tank ran dry while the pump was running. Did that damage anything?
It can. A vibration pump running dry heats up and wears quickly, and the machine may pull air into the water circuit. If the sound or the pressure changed after that, send it in and we will measure the pump's output instead of guessing.
  • What should the brew gauge read during a shot on my ECM?
Around 9 bar at the group during extraction is the usual target. Much higher and the expansion valve needs attention. Much lower and the pump or a restriction in the water path is the likely cause. We set and check it on the bench before return.
  • Can you collect the machine from a hillside house above Ralston Avenue?
Yes. Mention steep steps or a long walk from the street when you book. Have the machine off and cool, the tank empty, and the portafilters packed separately so nothing rattles loose on the way to the bench.
  • What does the ECM pickup deposit cover?
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately.
  • How long does ECM bench repair take?
Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered.
  • What warranty applies to ECM coffee-machine repair?
6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
