A dual-boiler ECM keeps brewing and steaming apart. One boiler holds brew water at a set temperature, the other makes steam, and each has its own heating element and its own safety cutout. That split is why a dual-boiler can pull a good shot while the steam wand gives nothing. When only one side fails, the fault usually lives on that side: an element, its cutout, the steam boiler fill, or the sensor the controller reads.
We collect ECM machines from the rebuilt houses on the west side near Stevens Creek and from the older homes on the eastern grid around Rancho Rinconada. On our bench both boilers start from cold, and we watch which one stops heating and why. The written quote names the failed part, and it has to be approved before we replace anything.
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Steam boiler cold while the brew side is ready. Brew temperature reaches its set point, but the steam gauge never moves. We test the steam element for continuity, check whether its safety cutout has opened, and look for the reason it opened. A cutout that trips because the boiler ran low will trip again unless the fill problem is fixed first.
- Steam boiler that never finishes filling. The steam boiler fills through its own valve whenever a level probe calls for water. A probe coated with scale or a fill valve that sticks leaves the boiler low, and the cutout shuts the element off to protect it. We clean or replace the probe and the valve and watch several refill cycles.
- Controller showing a temperature error. When the controller gets a reading that makes no sense, it stops heating and shows an error. The sensor, its plug or the lead between them fails more often than the board itself. We check the sensor against a reference thermometer before anyone talks about a new controller.

FAQ
ECM in Cupertino questions, answered.
-
The brew side is ready but the steam wand is dead. Can we keep making espresso?
Only if the steam boiler is simply switched off in the settings. If the steam side failed on its own, switch the machine off until it's checked, and do not reset a tripped cutout, because it opened for a reason. Book the pickup and tell us roughly when the steam stopped. -
The heating light on our dual-boiler blinks all the time. Is something wrong?
Not by itself. An electronic controller holds temperature by pulsing the element on and off, and the light follows those pulses. It becomes a concern when the light burns without a break and the temperature never arrives, or when it goes dark and the boiler cools. -
We only steam milk on weekends. Should the steam boiler run all week?
If your machine lets you switch the steam boiler off, doing that on espresso-only days is fine and saves some power. Turn it back on well before you need steam so it can fill and come up to pressure. The brew side does not mind either way. -
