ECM machines open steam and hot water in one of two ways: a knob that turns a multi-turn valve, or a joystick lever that opens fully with a short throw. Both depend on seals that sit in hot water and steam all day. A worn knob valve drips and needs more force to close. A worn joystick valve leaks at the pivot or will not return cleanly to off. The steam wand has its own joint at the base that lets it swing, and that seal wears too.
For a pickup from a newer house in North Los Altos or an older one near Country Club or Loyola Corners, switch the machine off once a valve leaks steam, and tell us which valve and how it feels. On our bench we rebuild the valve with new seals, reset its travel, and check the wand joint. A written quote comes before any of that work.

Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Joystick valve leaking at the pivot. Steam escaping around the lever means the shaft seal is worn. We take the valve apart, replace the seals and any worn spring or cam parts, and check that it closes fully in the off position.
- Knob valve that keeps turning before it closes. A worn seat or a hardened seal makes a multi-turn knob keep turning without a clean stop. We clean or replace the seat and seal and set the valve so it shuts with a light hand.
- Wand joint leaking and the wand drooping. The joint at the base of the wand is sealed with small rings that harden with heat. Steam or water escapes there, and the wand may flop instead of holding its position. We replace the seals, and the tension part if it has weakened.

Our steam joystick hisses even when it is off. Can we keep using it?
No. Steam passing a worn seal cuts the seat further and wastes boiler pressure. Switch the machine off until the valve is repaired, and book a pickup. -
Our steam wand drops down and will not stay where we put it. Is that a repair?
Yes, and a small one. The joint at the base of the wand has seals and a tension part that wear out. We replace them on the bench, and the wand holds its position again and stops leaking at the base. -
Why does our steam wand shoot water before it gives steam?
Steam condenses in the wand and valve while the machine sits. Open the valve over the drip tray for a second or two before steaming milk. If water keeps coming after that, the boiler may be overfilled, which points to the level probe or the fill valve. -
