Should we plug the machine into an extension cord or power strip?

No. A heavy heating load through a light cord or strip gets hot and can cause exactly the tripping and scorching we end up repairing. Plug it straight into a wall outlet on a circuit with as little else on it as possible.

Does Pinole water scale an ECM?

Slowly. EBMUD water is soft to moderate, so scale builds at a gentler pace than on harder supplies. It still builds, and we look at the boiler while the machine is open on the bench.

Kitchens in houses of that age often have fewer circuits than a newer kitchen, and an ECM heating two boilers while the microwave runs can be too much for one of them. When a machine trips a breaker in one of these kitchens, we need to know whether the machine is at fault or the circuit is simply overloaded.

That is a bench question. We pick up the machine, run it on a dedicated circuit, and test the heating elements for leakage to ground. If the machine is sound, we tell you so and point you to an electrician. If it is not, we quote the repair in writing before any work starts.

What we repair on the bench.

Heating element leaking current to ground. An element with a damaged sheath can heat normally and still trip a GFCI outlet or breaker as it warms. We test the insulation with a meter at temperature, replace the element if it fails, and run several full heat cycles.
Anti-vacuum valve hissing at warm-up. This small valve vents air as the boiler heats and should seal once steam builds. A worn seal leaves it hissing and dripping into the cabinet. We replace it and check the wiring below for water damage.
Power switch or wiring showing heat damage. A machine that cuts out, or a switch that feels warm, can have a loose or scorched connection. We open the case, inspect every high-current connection, and replace damaged terminals, wiring or the switch itself.
