Usually not. The sensor or float that reads the tank level is a small part, and a tank that was cleaned or refilled roughly can knock the float out of place. It is still worth fixing properly, since a machine that runs with a faulty level sensor can run the pump dry.

Why do you want to run the machine before quoting?

Because many ECM faults only show when the machine is hot and has been working for a while. Watching it fail on the bench means the quote covers the real fault, not a list of guesses.

The kitchens are compact, and an ECM often shares its outlet and its counter with other appliances. Rodeo and Crockett are on EBMUD water, soft to moderate. Port Costa's treated water comes from the Contra Costa Water District instead.

We pick up in all three towns and take the machine to our bench. There we note the symptom you describe, run the machine until it shows, and check the heating controls, pump, valves and seals. You approve a written quote before anything is replaced. When the work is done, the machine is heated, run through a set of shots and steamed before it comes back to you.

Common repairs we do

What we repair on the bench.

Tank sensor calling for water that is already there. The tank sensor can stick or the magnet float can jam, so the machine refuses to run with water right there. We clean or replace the sensor and float and check the wiring to the control.
Boiler overfilling and spitting water from the wand. If the level probe is coated or its wiring has failed, the boiler keeps filling and the steam wand throws water. We clean or replace the probe and watch several fill cycles on the bench.
Portafilter that will not lock in. A worn gasket or a bent portafilter ear can stop the handle from seating. We check the ears, the group and the gasket, then replace what is worn so the handle locks at the right angle.
