ECM in Piedmont
ECM in Piedmont kitchens.
Most of Piedmont was built between the 1910s and the 1930s, and the kitchens have been redone since, many in the remodels of 1995 to 2010. An ECM in one of those kitchens may run on a newer circuit or on wiring older than it looks. When the machine trips a breaker or goes cold halfway through a session, part of the job is working out whether the fault lives in the machine or in the house.
We pick up in 94610, 94611 and 94620 and run the ECM on our bench on its own circuit. If it heats, holds and brews there without a fault, that points toward your outlet or wiring. If it fails, we follow it to the element, the cutout, the controls or the internal wiring. The written quote explains which, and repair follows your approval.
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Machine goes cold after the safety cutout trips. A boiler safety cutout shuts off the element when the boiler overheats, usually because the pressure or temperature control stopped switching off, or the boiler ran low on water. We find what let it overheat before resetting or replacing the cutout.
- Drip tray filling up during every shot. The expansion valve bleeds off excess pressure while brewing and while the machine heats. If scale keeps it from seating, or it opens too early, the tray fills quickly and brew pressure falls. We clean or replace the valve and set it so the gauge reads right under load.
- Pump runs but draws nothing from the tank. An air lock, a stuck tank float or a kinked intake hose leaves the pump running dry, and a vibration pump heats and wears out quickly that way. We check the tank switch, the intake and the pump, in that order.

FAQ
ECM in Piedmont questions, answered.
-
Our central Piedmont house still has some original wiring. Can it hurt the machine?
An overloaded circuit usually trips or sags rather than damaging an ECM. A loose outlet is different, because it can heat the plug. If the plug feels warm or looks browned, stop using that outlet and have an electrician check it. We test the machine itself on the bench. -
Is it safe to reset the breaker and keep brewing?
Once. If it trips again with nothing else running, leave the machine off. A repeat trip usually means the element or the wiring is leaking current, and that needs testing before the next shot. -
Our ECM went in with the kitchen remodel years ago. Is it worth repairing?
Often it is. The boilers, group and frame on these machines are made to be serviced, and the wear parts can be replaced. The quote lists what yours needs, so you can weigh it against a new machine before we start. -
What does the ECM pickup deposit cover?
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. -
How long does ECM bench repair take?
Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. -
What warranty applies to ECM coffee-machine repair?
6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
