Many owners never change it, and it slowly goes stale. Drawing a cup or two from the hot water tap each day brings fresh water into the boiler through the autofill. If the machine has sat for a couple of weeks, draw more before the first drink.

Should we switch the machine off when we travel?

Yes. Switch it off, empty the tank and the drip tray, and leave the lid open so the tank dries. When you get back, refill with fresh water and run a cup or two through the group and the tap before the first shot.

What we repair on the bench.

Stale taste from the hot water tap. Water held in the steam boiler for weeks picks up a flat, metallic taste. We drain and flush the boiler, look at the element and the walls for scale, and replace the hot water valve seals if the tap has been dribbling.
Slimy film in the water tank and intake hose. Tank water left standing grows a film, and pieces of it get pulled toward the pump and the valves. We clean the tank, replace the intake hose and any stained tubing, and flush the water path until it runs clear.
Hot water tap coughing steam before the water comes. A worn valve seat, or a boiler running low, makes the tap spit steam before the water flows. We rebuild the valve, check the fill level against the probe, and run the tap several times at full pressure to confirm a clean stream.
