Do we need a filter on EBMUD water?

A filter is still a good idea. Soft to moderate water slows scale, but minerals still build up where water boils. A tank filter, changed on schedule, keeps the interval between descales long.

Can a machine that sits under our cabinets cause damage?

Steam and heat rising into a cabinet can warp the wood above and cook the machine's own wiring. Pull the machine forward when you use it, or leave space above. If there are brown marks under the cabinet, have us look at the wiring.

What we repair on the bench.

Safety valve venting steam from the boiler. If the safety valve lets steam go, the boiler has gone past its limit. A sticking pressurestat or a stuck heating relay is the usual cause. We find what let the pressure climb, fix it, and replace the valve if its seat is damaged.
Steam damage under upper cabinets. A machine that sits under a cabinet vents steam into a tight space, and heat builds around the switch and the wiring. We inspect those connections, replace anything scorched, and suggest a spot on the counter with more room above.
Rotary pump losing pressure on a plumbed-in machine. Some ECM machines run from a water line with a rotary pump. When pressure falls, the pump head may be worn or its bypass has drifted. We test with a gauge, adjust, and replace the pump head if it will not hold.
