ECM in Atherton
ECM in Atherton kitchens.
In Atherton the espresso machine is not always in the main kitchen. It may sit in a butler pantry, a bar area, or a guest house that is used a few weeks a year. An ECM that stands idle for months tends to come back with stiff gaskets, stale water in the tank and a valve that sticks on the first heat-up. Running it hard on day one can turn a sticky valve into a leak inside the cabinetry.
We deal with that on our bench, not in your pantry. We collect the machine, flush it and bring it up to heat while we watch, and let the faults show before anything is replaced. The written quote separates what is broken from what only needs cleaning, and no work starts until you approve it.
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Leaks that start after months without use. Gaskets and rubber seals dry out and shrink when a machine sits empty, and the first heat cycle pushes water past them. We pressure test the boilers and the group, replace the seals that weep, and run the machine long enough to see the leaks stay gone when it is hot, not only cold.
- Pump that hums but moves no water. After a long idle stretch a pump can stick on dried scale, or a valve downstream can seize closed. We check whether the pump itself turns, clear or replace the sticking valve, and confirm flow and pressure on the gauge before the machine leaves the bench.
- Heat exchanger group too hot for the first shot. On a heat exchanger ECM, water resting in the group loop overheats while the machine idles, and the first shot comes out harsh. A short flush handles that in daily use. If the group runs too hot even after a flush, the pressure switch or the boiler setting is off, and we correct it.

FAQ
ECM in Atherton questions, answered.
-
The ECM in our guest house has not run since last year. Should we try it before pickup?
Better not. Old water and dry seals are a poor mix with a full heat-up. Empty the tank, leave the machine off, and let us start it on the bench, where a leak lands on a tray and not in your cabinetry. -
Can you take the machine out of a butler pantry without marking the cabinetry?
Yes. We pad the counter edge and lift the machine clear instead of sliding it. If it is connected to a water line or a drain, have that disconnected before pickup, or tell us when you book and we will talk it through. -
Why does a flush matter on some ECM machines and not on others?
Heat exchanger machines brew with water heated through the steam boiler, so water resting in the loop gets too hot and a flush cools it. Dual boiler machines hold brew water at its own set temperature and need little flushing. Our quote tells you which kind you have. -
What does the ECM pickup deposit cover?
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. -
How long does ECM bench repair take?
Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. -
What warranty applies to ECM coffee-machine repair?
6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
