ECM in Burlingame
ECM in Burlingame kitchens.
El Camino Real splits Burlingame in two. To the east, Lyon-Hoag and the Easton Addition are older bungalows and post-war houses. To the west, up toward the Hillsborough line and Burlingame Hills, the homes are larger and the kitchens have been remodeled. An ECM can sit in either, and when something goes wrong, the two gauges on its front usually show it before the coffee does.
A steam needle that swings wide, a brew needle that climbs too high, or one that stops moving each point at a different part. We pick the machine up, watch both gauges on our bench through a long warm-up and a run of shots, and quote the part that caused the reading. Nothing is repaired until you approve the written quote.
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Steam pressure that swings up and down. On heat exchanger ECMs a mechanical pressure switch turns the element on and off. As its contacts pit and its diaphragm scales, the switching band widens and the steam gauge swings. We test the switch, replace it if it is worn, and set steam pressure back to the range the machine was built for.
- Gauge needle stuck or reading zero. A gauge that never moves can be a failed gauge or a blocked line feeding it, and scale in that small tube is often the reason. We clear or replace the line and the gauge, then check its reading against a test gauge fitted in the portafilter.
- Clicking and chattering while the machine heats. A pressure switch or relay that chatters during warm-up wears its contacts on every cycle. Left alone it can weld shut and keep heating the boiler. We replace the worn switch or relay and check the element wiring for heat damage while the panels are off.

FAQ
ECM in Burlingame questions, answered.
-
My ECM steam gauge swings between two numbers. Is that normal?
Some swing is normal on a heat exchanger machine, because the pressure switch works in a band. A wide swing, or one that gets wider month by month, means the switch is wearing and should be replaced before its contacts fail. -
Is it safe to use an ECM whose steam gauge sits at zero?
If the machine still makes good steam, the gauge or its line has failed and the boiler itself is working. If there is no steam either, the machine may not be heating at all. In both cases, stop, unplug it and book a pickup rather than guessing. -
What should I tell you about the gauges when I book?
Where each needle sits cold, where it settles after warm-up, and what it does during a shot and while steaming. A phone photo of each works. Those readings let us set up the bench test to match what you see at home. -
What does the ECM pickup deposit cover?
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. -
How long does ECM bench repair take?
Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. -
What warranty applies to ECM coffee-machine repair?
6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
