Empty and dry the tank and the drip tray, and leave the steam wand and portafilter clean. Before the next gathering, fill it with fresh water and let it heat fully, then flush water through the group and draw some steam to clear the old water from the lines.

A puff of steam came from the valve on top of the boiler. Should we stop using it?

Yes, switch it off and let it cool. That valve only opens when the pressure is too high, which means something upstream failed to cut the heat. It needs to come in rather than keep running.

Can you carry the machine out through the front garden path?

Yes. We carry the machine by hand, cold and empty, and set it down only on a surface you point out. Tell us about any narrow gates or steps when you book so we bring the right help.

What we repair on the bench.

Group leaking after weeks without use. A group gasket that sits hot, then cold, then idle for weeks shrinks and hardens. Water sprays around the portafilter when the pump starts. We replace the gasket and shower screen, clean the group, and check that the portafilter locks in at the right angle.
Stale water and scale in a rarely used boiler. Water left standing in the boiler and tank picks up an off taste, and minerals settle as it sits. We drain and flush the machine, inspect the boiler and fittings for scale, and replace anything that has started to crust shut.
Steam boiler safety valve letting off steam. The safety valve opens when boiler pressure goes above its limit. If the pressure switch sticks closed, or a controller relay welds shut, the element keeps heating until that valve lifts. We find what kept the heat on, replace it, and test the safety valve before returning the machine.
