Rocket Espresso in Berkeley
Rocket Espresso in Berkeley kitchens.
Many Rocket machines brew through a classic lever-operated group. Lifting the lever turns a cam that opens valves inside the group, one letting water in and one draining pressure away after the shot. Over the years the cam wears, its grease dries, and the small gaskets on the valve stems harden. The lever turns stiff or sticky, water drips from the group with the lever down, or the puck comes out wet and soupy.
Berkeley's 1900s to 1930s bungalows and brown-shingles were wired long before grounded outlets were standard. A metal espresso machine needs a proper ground, so if yours runs from an adapter, have that sorted before the machine comes home. We collect from Elmwood, North Berkeley and the Berkeley Hills, strip and rebuild the group on the bench, and send a written quote first.
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Lever that sticks or grinds on the way up. A dry or worn cam makes the lever stiff and uneven. We take the group apart, clean the cam and its seat, replace the cam if it is scored, and grease it with a food-safe lubricant rated for the heat.
- Water dripping from the group between shots. With the lever down, the inlet valve in the group should hold back water from the heat exchanger. A hardened gasket or a scaled valve seat lets it through, and the group drips into the tray. We replace the valve gaskets and springs, clean the seats, and watch for drips through a full hot session.
- Portafilter handle swinging further every month. The group gasket shrinks and hardens with heat, so the handle travels further until the seal leaks around the basket during the shot. We replace the gasket and the shower screen together and check the lock-in position with your own portafilter.

FAQ
Rocket Espresso in Berkeley questions, answered.
-
How often does the group gasket need replacing?
It depends on how much the machine is used. For a machine that is on every day, a yearly check is sensible. The signs are a handle that swings well past center, grounds stuck on the gasket edge, or water leaking around the basket during a shot. -
Is backflushing with detergent safe for this kind of group?
On a lever group with a drain valve, yes, using a blind basket and a detergent made for espresso machines. It keeps the valve and the drain path clean. Do it less often than plain water backflushes, because detergent also strips the grease from the cam. -
Our North Berkeley kitchen stays cool. Does that affect the machine?
A cool room slows the warm-up, especially for the heavy brass group, which takes its heat from the boiler. Give it longer before the first shot and run a little water through the group first. If the group stays cool after a long warm-up, the circulation loop needs a bench check. -
What does the Rocket Espresso pickup deposit cover?
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. -
How long does Rocket Espresso bench repair take?
Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. -
What warranty applies to Rocket Espresso coffee-machine repair?
6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
