Rocket Espresso in Moraga
Rocket Espresso in Moraga kitchens.
Moraga sits in a canyon behind the Oakland hills, and winters under the tree canopy run cool and damp. A heat-exchanger Rocket notices. Its heavy brass group warms only from boiler water circulating through it, so in a cold kitchen the group lags well behind the boiler gauge. The first shot of the morning comes out sour, and it is easy to decide something is broken.
Sometimes something is. A restrictor in the group loop that has scaled narrow keeps the group cool however long the machine sits. We collect from Campolindo, Sanders Ranch, the Moraga Country Club streets and the Rheem Valley side, then log group temperature on our bench from a cold start. The written quote says which case you have before any part is touched.
$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. The deposit is not credited toward the repair. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Group head cool while the boiler is at full pressure. Hot water moves between the boiler and the group through a loop with a narrow restrictor in it. Scale closes that restrictor down, circulation slows, and the group never gets properly hot. We clear or replace the restrictor, flush the loop, and measure group temperature again from cold before the machine goes home.
- Boiler pressure wandering from one morning to the next. Many heat-exchanger Rockets regulate the boiler with a mechanical pressure switch. Its contacts pit and its diaphragm tires with age, so the element cuts in and out at shifting points and steam power changes day to day. We watch several heating cycles against the gauge, then clean, adjust or replace the switch.
- Hiss under the cup tray that continues after warm-up. During warm-up a small anti-vacuum valve lets air out of the boiler, then closes once steam pressure builds. A hardened seal or a grain of scale holds it open, and steam keeps escaping into the case, where it condenses on the wiring. We reseal or replace the valve and confirm it closes cleanly.

FAQ
Rocket Espresso in Moraga questions, answered.
-
Why does our Rocket need so much longer to be ready on winter mornings?
The boiler reaches pressure well before the group has warmed through, and a cold kitchen widens that gap. Wait until the metal of the group feels hot, then run a short flush before the first shot. If the group never gets there after a long warm-up, the loop may be restricted and the machine should come in. -
Can we run a store-bought descaler through a heat-exchanger Rocket?
We advise against it. Descaler loosens scale in flakes, and flakes lodge in the fill valve, the level probe or the small restrictor in the group loop. On the bench we open the circuit, clean what needs it and flush it properly. Good filtered water between services does more for the machine than descaler. -
Should the machine be left on all day through the cold months?
There is no need. Switch it on well ahead of breakfast, or put it on a timer plug. Holding the boiler at pressure all day ages the gaskets and seals sooner and builds scale faster, and the shots are no better for it. -
