On a dual-boiler Rocket, the controller usually switches each element through a solid-state relay. It is a small part with no moving contacts, and it fails in two ways. It can fail open, leaving that boiler cold, or fail shorted, so the element runs nonstop until the safety cutout trips. Both show up as a temperature fault, and both are easy to confuse with a dead element or a bad controller.

Los Altos runs from the rebuilds of the last decade in North Los Altos and near downtown to the older homes in Country Club and Loyola Corners. We collect the machine and test each boiler's element, relay, probe and cutout separately on the bench. The written quote names the one that failed, and nothing is replaced until you approve it.

What we repair on the bench.

Brew boiler overheating and tripping its cutout. A relay that has shorted keeps the element on no matter what the controller asks. The brew boiler climbs past its set point until the cutout opens. We replace the relay, check the cutout, and watch the controller hold temperature over a long run.
One boiler cold while the other heats. If the display shows one boiler stuck at room temperature, the element, its relay or its cutout has opened. We measure each in turn with the machine on the bench, rather than swapping parts until the heat comes back.
Brew temperature drifting between shots. A probe that has worked loose in its fitting, or picked up scale, reads late and lets the temperature overshoot and undershoot. We reseat or replace the probe and compare the controller's reading with a thermometer through a run of shots.
