On a Rocket with a vibration pump, an expansion valve caps brew pressure and sends the excess back to the tank or the drip tray, depending on the model. If the brew gauge reads well above its usual mark during a shot, or clean water keeps running into the tray once the machine is hot and idle, that valve or the pump is the place to start. Both faults change the coffee long before anything breaks outright.
We pick up across Burlingame, from the Lyon-Hoag and Easton Addition bungalows east of El Camino Real to the remodeled homes west of it toward the Hillsborough line. On the bench we measure brew pressure with a gauge fitted to a blind portafilter, reset the valve, and check the pump's output. You get a written quote before any repair.

Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Brew gauge reading too high during the shot. A stuck or misadjusted expansion valve lets pressure climb past what the coffee needs, and shots run bitter and uneven. We clean the valve, replace its seal if it is worn, and set the opening pressure with a portafilter gauge.
- Mist and water inside the case near the pump. The fittings between the pump, the expansion valve and the heat exchanger carry full brew pressure. A cracked fitting or a loose hose clamp sprays a fine mist inside the case that ends up as a puddle under the machine. We pressure-test the line with the case off and replace the failed part.
- Pump louder than it used to be. A vibration pump that has worn or scaled up sounds harsher and moves less water. We also check whether the rubber pump mounts have hardened, which makes a healthy pump sound loud, before deciding the pump itself needs replacing.

FAQ
Rocket Espresso in Burlingame questions, answered.
-
What should the brew gauge read during a shot?
Espresso is usually pulled at around 9 bar, and a well-set machine shows something close to that with a good grind. A reading far higher against a blind basket means the expansion valve needs attention. A low reading with coffee in the basket can simply mean the grind is too coarse. -
Why does water drip into the tray while the machine warms up?
As the water in the heat exchanger warms, it expands and has to go somewhere, so a little escapes through the expansion valve. That part is normal. If water keeps coming once the machine is fully hot and idle, a valve is not sealing and the machine is worth a bench check. -
Do you collect from homes near Burlingame Avenue and Broadway?
Yes, anywhere in 94010 and 94011. For an apartment, tell us the entry, the floor and whether there is an elevator. Have the machine cool, the tank empty and the portafilter out. -
