Hercules is on EBMUD water, soft to moderate, so a Rocket here scales slowly. That moves the likely faults toward wear. Pumps lose pressure, the group gasket hardens, and the brew valve starts to drip between shots. A machine can heat perfectly and still pull a poor shot.
We pick up from the 1970s and 1980s subdivisions off Refugio Valley Road, known locally as the Birds, the Trees and Flowers, the Gemstones, the Astronauts and the Islands, and from newer homes in Victoria by the Bay, Olympian Hills and Hercules by the Bay. On the bench we fit a pressure gauge in the portafilter, measure what the pump delivers at the group, and write the quote before we replace anything.

Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Vibration pump getting louder as pressure drops. A tired vibration pump buzzes harder and delivers less. Shots run slow, the crema thins, and the gauge reads low at the top of the pull. We check output with the portafilter gauge, look for a blocked inlet hose, and replace the pump if it still falls short.
- Group gasket letting water past the portafilter. Heat hardens the gasket until the handle swings further round than it used to and water weeps from the rim during the shot. We fit a new gasket and shower screen, clean the seat in the group, and check the handle locks where it should.
- Brew valve dripping between shots. Inside a lever-operated group, the cam and the valve seals wear with every pull, and the group drips when it should be closed. We rebuild the group valve with new seals, grease it with food-safe lubricant, and run a set of shots to confirm it shuts off clean.

Is soft EBMUD water ever a problem for a Rocket?
Mostly it helps. Scale builds slowly, so descaling can be spaced further apart. Water with almost no minerals can make a level probe misread, which is why filters made for espresso leave a little hardness in. If the autofill starts acting up after a filter change, tell us which filter you use. -
Our Rocket runs twice a day for a busy household. How often should the group gasket be changed?
About once a year with daily use, sooner if the handle begins turning past its usual stop. A plain water backflush after the last shot of the day keeps coffee oils off the gasket and the shower screen, which slows the hardening. -
Do you collect from the new apartments by the Waterfront?
Yes. For an apartment building, tell us the entrance, the unit and where to park or meet. The machine should be cool, drained and ready to carry, with the portafilter and baskets packed separately. -
