Benicia's water comes from more than one place: the State Water Project, Lake Berryessa and Lake Herman. It is moderately hard on average, but the hardness moves with the blend, so a descaling routine that suited your Rocket one year can fall behind the next. That matters most on a heat-exchanger machine, where the steam boiler also heats the brew water and scale in it changes both.
Pickup covers the Eastside, Southampton, the West Side and the streets around First Street downtown. Before we collect, note what the machine does and when: a hiss after warm-up, a tap that spits, a gauge needle that wanders. On the bench we read boiler pressure against a reference gauge, watch the heating cycle through a long warm-up, and put the quote in writing before any part is replaced.

Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Boiler pressure swinging wider than it should. On a heat-exchanger Rocket the pressure switch turns the element on and off. Pitted contacts, or scale in the small tube that feeds the switch, widen the swing, so one shot runs hot and the next runs cool. We log the cycle against a reference gauge, then clean the tube or replace the switch.
- Hot-water tap spitting steam instead of water. The hot-water tap draws from the steam boiler. When the water level sits too low, or the level probe misreads it, the tap sputters steam and splashes. We check the probe and the autofill, correct the level, and run the tap until it pours cleanly.
- Anti-vacuum valve that keeps hissing once hot. This small valve lets air out while the boiler warms and should then seal. Scale or a hardened seal keeps it venting, which wets the inside of the case and wastes heat. We replace the valve or its seal and look over the case for moisture damage near the wiring.

FAQ
Rocket Espresso in Benicia questions, answered.
-
Benicia's water varies with its source. How do we know when to descale?
Test the tap a few times a year with hardness strips and shorten the routine when the reading climbs. A filter sized for espresso evens out the swings. If the steam boiler already refills slowly or the element has tripped its cutout, the scale is past what a routine will clear, and the machine should come in. -
Our Rocket in a Southampton kitchen feels damp inside the case. Should it come in?
Yes. Moisture inside the case usually means a valve is venting steam or a fitting is weeping. Left alone, it reaches the wiring and the switch contacts. Unplug it, let it cool, and keep it off until it has been opened up on the bench. -
Can the pickup be from a studio in the Arsenal instead of our house?
Yes. Tell us the building and where the machine sits inside it. Have it cool, drained and ready to carry, with the portafilter and baskets bagged. It comes back to the same spot once the repair is approved and done. -
