Empty the tank and the drip tray, and leave the portafilter out of the group so the gasket is not squeezed. Before guests arrive, refill with fresh water, heat the machine fully, and draw a few cups through the group and the hot-water spout to replace what sat in the boiler.

Can gate staff hand the machine over if we are away?

Yes, if you set it up with them and with us. The machine should be cool, drained and packed, with the portafilter and any accessories in a bag. Tell us who will hand it over, and we arrange the gate access by text before pickup.

Does a machine that sits unused still need descaling?

Scale builds with the water you heat, not with time, so an idle machine scales slowly. The bigger risks are stale water and dried seals. Change the water before each use, and have the machine checked if it leaks or the pump sounds rough after a long rest.
