Switch it off and let it cool. That hiss is usually the safety valve releasing pressure the boiler should never have reached. The valve protected the machine, but something upstream failed, often the pressure switch or the heating control. Running it again only repeats the overshoot, so send it to our bench.

Our Montclair house has a long flight of steps down to the street. Can you still take the machine?

Yes. Steps and steep driveways are part of carrying heavy equipment, and we plan for them. The machine goes out cool, drained and upright, and comes back to the same door.

A heat exchanger or dual boiler machine carries a safety valve on its steam boiler. If a control upstream fails and pressure keeps climbing, that valve opens and vents steam inside the case. The valve is rarely the fault. We collect the machine, find what let the pressure run up, and send you a written price before any work goes ahead.

Common repairs we do

What we repair on the bench.

Steam venting from inside the case while the machine heats. When the steam boiler overshoots, the safety valve lifts and releases steam under the cover. The usual causes are a pressure switch with welded contacts, a relay stuck closed, or a controller reading a failed sensor. We replace the part that let pressure climb, then fit a new safety valve if the old one no longer reseats.
White crust on the frame under the boiler. A fitting that weeps slowly may never leave a puddle. The water evaporates on the hot boiler and leaves a white mineral crust, which is often the first sign of a leak. We trace the crust to its source, reseal or replace the fitting, and clean the frame so any new weep shows at once.
Power switch that crackles or needs a second press. The main switch carries the full heating load each time it turns on. Its contacts pit, and it starts to crackle, glow or need a second try. A worn switch can overheat the wiring behind it. We replace the switch and inspect the terminals and wire ends that feed it.
