Not on its own. A louder buzz with normal shots often means the pump mounts have hardened. It becomes serious if the shots also run weak or the pump sounds like it is pulling air, since a pump that runs dry wears out. In that case stop using it and send it in.

Why does the steam from our wand smell like old milk?

Milk has probably been drawn back into the steam boiler. Close the steam valve only after the wand is out of the milk, and purge the wand after each pitcher. Running steam through a clean wand helps a little, but a boiler that already smells sour needs to be drained and cleaned on the bench.

Common repairs we do

What we repair on the bench.

Pump that rattles against the frame. A vibration pump sits on rubber mounts that soak up its buzz. When the mounts harden or a clip slips, the pump knocks against the frame and the whole counter hums. We replace the mounts and clips, check the pump's output while it is out, and listen to the machine again under load.
Milk drawn back into the steam boiler. If the wand is left in the pitcher as the boiler cools, the vacuum that forms can pull milk up the wand. The next steam smells sour and the wand may spit. We flush the steam boiler and wand, clean the valve, and check the vacuum breaker, which is meant to let air in and stop that pull.
A puddle that forms under the water tank. A hairline crack in the tank, a worn seal where the intake hose passes, or a tank not seated fully can leave water pooling under the machine. We check the tank, its fittings and its level sensor, and replace the part that weeps. On a small counter, catching it early protects the cabinet below.
