We switch the steam boiler off on espresso-only days. Can that cause problems?

No. Brewing does not depend on the steam boiler, and turning it off saves some power. Switch it back on well before you need milk so it can fill and reach pressure. If it does not come back up, the setting, relay or element on that side needs a look.

The controller reads a sensor in each boiler and switches each element through a relay. When a relay sticks, a setting is lost or one side goes cold, the display often shows the symptom before the cup does. We collect the machine, run both boilers from cold on our bench, and compare the controller's readings with our own instruments. You approve the repair before anything is ordered.

What we repair on the bench.

Steam side that never heats on a dual boiler. If the brew side reaches temperature and the steam gauge never moves, the fault sits on the steam side: its element, its safety cutout, the relay that switches it, or a setting that turned the steam boiler off. We check the setting first, then test the element and the cutout, and find out why a tripped cutout opened before resetting it.
Settings that reset after a power cut. Temperature offsets, the steam boiler setting and any timer program live in the controller's memory. If they reset after a power cut, the memory or the controller's power supply may be failing, or a surge may have damaged the board. We test the controller's supply, enter the settings again, and run the machine through several power cycles to see whether they hold.
Brew boiler that overshoots and trips its cutout. A solid-state relay that fails shorted keeps the element on after the controller asks it to stop. The boiler overheats, the display runs past the setting, and the safety cutout opens. We replace the relay, check the heat sink it mounts on, and test the cutout before the machine goes back into use.
