Scale on the element or a weakening element are the likely causes, and a pressure switch cutting in late can add to it. Descaling may help if the machine is only lightly scaled, but on a heavily scaled boiler it can loosen flakes into the valves. If the change is large, send it in for a bench test first.

Can you collect from Almond Grove, Belgatos and Monte Sereno?

Yes. All three Los Gatos ZIPs are in the pickup area, Blossom Hill and downtown included. The machine should be cool, with the tank empty, when it is picked up. It returns to the same door once the repair is done.

We noticed a burning smell from the machine. Is it safe to switch it on again?

Leave it off and unplugged. A burning smell from an espresso machine that has been in use for a while points to an overheating connection or wiring, and switching it back on can make the damage worse. Send it to our bench and mention whether the smell came during warm-up or after brewing.

Monte Sereno and the hill neighborhoods have larger houses from the early 2000s remodel wave, Almond Grove and downtown have newer remodels, and the flats around Blossom Hill are older stock. We collect from all of them. The faults below start as small changes an owner notices first: a longer warm-up, a gauge reading that has crept, a smell that was not there before.

Those changes are worth acting on before they become a breakdown. A slower warm-up can mean scale on the element. A creeping gauge often means a pump drifting off its setting, and a hot smell can mean a connection overheating. We start the machine cold on our bench, time the warm-up, measure pressure and look for heat damage inside the case, and you approve the work before parts are ordered.

What we repair on the bench.

Warm-up that takes much longer than it used to. A heating element coated in scale passes heat to the water more slowly, and an element that is starting to fail draws less power. A pressure switch or controller that cuts in late adds to the delay. We time the warm-up, measure the element's resistance and current, and check the scale inside the boiler before choosing the fix.
Rotary pump pressure that has drifted off its setting. A rotary pump has an adjustment screw that sets its output pressure. Over time the internal bypass wears and the pressure drifts, usually downward, and shots start to run faster. We set the pump against a test gauge on a blind basket, and if it will not hold its setting, we replace the pump head.
A hot, burnt smell from inside the case. A new machine can smell for a few days as manufacturing oils burn off. A smell that starts later is different. A loose terminal overheating, wire insulation touching a boiler, or a small leak drying on a hot surface can all cause it. We open the case, find the heat damage, and repair the connection or the wiring before the machine runs again.
