Slowly, yes. Moist, salty air gets inside the case and works on connectors, screws and brass. Keeping the machine away from an open window facing the water, wiping the case dry, and having the inside looked at during regular maintenance keeps the damage small.

Yes. The communities up the coast are in the pickup area along with 94019, from Miramar to Arleta Park and the streets around Main Street. The machine is collected cool and empty and brought back the same way.

Our Profitec lost heat twice and then came back on by itself. What is going on?

A heating fault that comes and goes often traces to a loose or corroded connection, or to a safety thermostat close to its trip point. Both get worse with time. If it happens again, note whether it was during warm-up or after a long session, and send the machine in with that note.

Half Moon Bay anchors the Coastside, and we also collect from Montara, Moss Beach and El Granada up the coast. Salt air off the ocean speeds up corrosion on exposed metal, and an espresso machine has plenty of it inside the case: push-on connectors, screw terminals, brass fittings and the frame itself. The damage is slow, and it tends to surface as an electrical fault or a weep rather than as visible rust.

On our bench the covers come off first. We look at connectors and fittings for green or white crust, then run the machine from cold through brewing and steaming to find what has actually failed. Corrosion that has not caused trouble yet goes on the findings list too, so you can decide whether to deal with it now. Nothing is replaced until you say so.

Common repairs we do

What we repair on the bench.

Heating that cuts in and out from corroded connectors. The element, pressure switch and safety thermostat connect through push-on terminals. Corrosion raises the resistance at those joints, they heat up, and the machine may lose heat at random or show a scorched terminal. We clean or replace the terminals, check each joint under load, and replace any wire whose end has gone brittle.
Green crust on a brass fitting. Green or white crust on a fitting marks a slow weep that has been drying there for a while, and salt air adds to the corrosion on the outside. We take the fitting apart, replace the seal or the fitting, clean the surrounding frame, and run the machine hot to be sure the joint is dry.
Steam valve knob that turns stiff or gritty. The steam valve has a threaded stem and seals that need a thin film of food-safe grease. When the grease dries and the stem picks up scale or corrosion, the knob turns hard and the valve may not close cleanly. We rebuild the valve with a new seal and fresh grease, then check it at full steam pressure.
