Longer than the gauge suggests. The boiler reaches pressure first, and the heavy group comes up last. Lock the empty portafilter in while the machine heats so it warms too, and run a short flush before the first shot. If the group still feels cool well after the boiler is ready, that points to the circulation loop.

Do you pick up in Brisbane and Serramonte too?

Can I change a hardened group gasket myself?

You can, with the correct size and a small pick to lift the old one out. Take care not to scratch the group, and seat the shower screen evenly. If the old gasket crumbles into the group or the new one still leaks, send the machine to our bench rather than forcing the handle tighter.

What we repair on the bench.

Group that stays lukewarm while the boiler reads full pressure. The group on a heat exchanger machine is heated by water circulating from the boiler through a loop. Scale in the small restrictor on that loop, or air trapped after the tank ran dry, slows the circulation and leaves the group cool. We clear the restrictor, bleed the loop, and check group temperature again after a full warm-up.
Group gasket that has gone hard and shiny. A fresh gasket seals with a gentle turn of the handle. An old one turns hard, the handle swings further past center, and water or grounds escape around the rim of the basket. We pull the gasket and the shower screen, clean the seat inside the group, and fit new ones in the right size.
Steam wand that weeps at its swivel joint. The joint that lets the wand swing is sealed by small rubber rings. When they dry out and flatten, steam and hot water seep out at the base of the wand, and the joint may feel loose. We rebuild the joint with new rings and food-safe grease, then test it at full steam pressure.
