Faema in Portola Valley

Faema commercial service.

Portola Valley has almost no commercial storefronts, so the Faema groups I see are built into main house kitchens on the wooded acreage off Alpine Road and Portola Road, and a few sit in the mid-century modern homes in the Ladera-adjacent pockets where a full espresso bar got added during a remodel. Some of these properties run on well water, and well supply usually carries more mineral load than a municipal line, which pushes scale into the group and boiler faster than the owner expects.

The drive from San Ramon is about 50 to 60 minutes, I-680 south into CA-92 or I-280, and Portola Valley gets scheduled with Hillsborough on our Peninsula day so one trip covers both stops. This is a wildfire-aware area and some properties run on backup power during a PG&E shutoff, so if the machine tripped during an outage that is one of the first things I check. We are an independent shop and not part of Faema's factory network.

$150 pickup deposit. Pickup, bench diagnosis, and return are included. Repair work is quoted separately. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. Repair parts are covered for 6 months; consumables are covered for 90 days.

Common repairs we do

What we repair on the bench.

  • E61 group gasket and seal rebuild. A group gasket that hardens starts leaking around the portafilter first, and on well water properties the mineral load speeds that up. We pull the group, replace the gasket and shower screen seals, and reset the lever tension.
  • Brew and steam solenoid replacement. A steam wand that keeps hissing after you shut it off, or a group that will not stop its drip, usually means a stuck solenoid. We test the coil and valve body on the E61 or Teorema and replace the one that failed.
  • Heat-exchanger descale and water filtration. Well water on the outer roads toward Skyline scales a heat exchanger faster than town water does. We descale the exchanger and boiler and size the inline filter to the actual hardness on that property rather than a stock cartridge.
  • Pump and level probe service. Low pressure at the group traces most often to a worn rotary pump or a level probe reading wrong because of scale buildup. I check the pressure curve, rebuild or swap the pump, and clean or replace the probe until the boiler reads accurately again.
