Viking in Portola Valley
Viking in Portola Valley kitchens.
Portola Valley's custom homes sit on wooded acreage off Alpine Road and Portola Road, plus the mid-century houses in the Ladera-adjacent pockets and the ranch properties out toward Skyline. Viking built-in refrigeration turns up in a lot of these kitchens, and because this is a wildfire-aware community with real PG&E shutoff history, some homeowners have also started asking about backup power for the refrigeration specifically, not just the house.
What I get called for most is a built-in column or side-by-side that won't hold temperature anymore. Nine times out of ten that's the sealed system: a compressor pulling wrong, a leak at a joint, or an evaporator packed with frost behind the panel so air can't move. I'm EPA 608 certified, so I can legally pull the old charge, fix the actual leak, and recharge it correctly instead of just adding refrigerant and hoping it holds.
We're a San Ramon shop under CSLB #1136642. Panel-ready Viking units here are built into custom cabinetry, sometimes on properties with their own well and septic on the outer roads, and pulling the unit for compressor or condenser work means protecting that millwork the whole time, which I do as part of the job, not as an afterthought.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Sealed system fault on a built-in refrigerator. A Viking built-in that runs warm even with the compressor and fan both cycling is a sealed system problem almost every time. I check the compressor's amp draw, look for oil residue marking a leak at a brazed joint, and check whether the evaporator has frosted over enough to block airflow. From there I recover the charge, repair the leak, pull the line into a proper vacuum, and weigh in new refrigerant, since a top-off on a leaking system just fails again in a few months.
- Defrost components and fan motors. Frost building inside the cabinet, or a fan that's stopped turning, usually points to the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, or the fan motor itself. I cycle the defrost manually, test the heater and thermostat, and clear the condensate drain so meltwater doesn't refreeze and jam things again. On column units, the condenser sits at the top of the unit and packs with dust and debris over time out here, so I clean it while I have the panel open anyway.
- Ice maker slowing or stopping. When a built-in ice maker slows to almost nothing or quits, the usual suspects are a sticking water inlet valve, a fill tube that's frozen partway shut, or a worn-out harvest motor. I test flow through the valve, thaw and clear the fill line, and run a harvest cycle before swapping any parts, because a partially frozen line looks a lot like a dead unit until you actually check it.

FAQ
Viking in Portola Valley questions, answered.
-
How long is the drive out to Portola Valley?
50 to 60 minutes from San Ramon, down 680 and across on 92 or 280 depending on the route. Portola Valley runs on the same Peninsula day as Hillsborough, so I can give you a firm booked window with a written arrival time. -
Can you work around our gate and property access?
Yes, that's normal out here. Tell me the gate code or arrange access ahead of time and I'll plan the visit around it, same as I do for the rest of my Peninsula route. -
What does it cost just for you to come diagnose it?
$75, and that gets waived once you approve the repair. On sealed system work I give you the written quote after I've actually found the fault, because whether it's a leak, a compressor, or a control board changes the number.
