Half Moon Bay is the anchor of the Coastside for us, and that stretch of Highway 1 covers Montara, Moss Beach, and El Granada along with the town itself, from the restaurants on Main Street down to the boats at Pillar Point Harbor. A number of these homes are second properties or full-time coastal residences with a Viking range or built-in refrigerator installed during a remodel, and inland toward the ranches off Higgins Canyon there are some larger kitchens too.
The coast does something to appliances that inland cities don't have to deal with. Salt air works on metal steadily, and I see it in hinge pins that have gone stiff or started to pit, igniters that spark weak or intermittent because moisture has gotten into the connection, and control board connectors that corrode enough to cause a fault that looks electronic but is really just a green, crusted pin. I check for that corrosion first on any Coastside call before I assume a part is simply worn out.

- Hinge and connector corrosion from salt air. On a Coastside Viking unit, I often find the hinge pins stiff or pitted and the electrical connectors behind the control panel starting to corrode, even on appliances that aren't that old. We clean or replace the corroded connector, work the hinge free or swap it if the pitting is bad, and where it makes sense, use a bit of dielectric grease on the connection to slow the salt air down.
- Igniter and spark module reliability. A Viking burner that sparks weakly or skips a click here and there is often moisture working into the igniter or the spark module rather than a simple worn part. We dry out and test the connections, replace the igniter if it's pitted, and confirm consistent spark before calling the job done.
- Control board faults from corroded connections. A Viking control board that seems to fault randomly, working fine one day and throwing an error the next, is worth checking at the connector before anyone condemns the board itself. We trace the fault to a corroded pin or a bad ground more often on the coast than we do inland, and that's a cheaper fix than a new board.
