Does oily, dark-roast coffee cause grinder problems?

It can. Oily beans stick in the hopper and leave residue on the burrs, which slows the grind and changes the dose. If you use dark roasts, keep the hopper clean and tell us when you book so we check for buildup.

Can you pick up from a store near the Pinole Vista Shopping Center?

Yes, and from Fitzgerald Drive, Old Town and the rest of Pinole. We come at an agreed time, disconnect the machine and bring it back after the approved repair.

Whether the machine sits in Old Town, with its turn-of-the-century buildings, or near the Pinole Vista Shopping Center, we collect it and put the grinder on our bench first. We measure the dose, check the burrs, replace them if they are worn and recalibrate the grind. Pinole's water is EBMUD, soft to moderate, so we check the heater for scale as well, though it builds slowly here.

What we repair on the bench.

Worn burrs and a drifting dose. Burrs dull with use, and a dull pair crushes rather than cuts, which makes more fines and less even grounds. We replace the burrs, set the grind and dose, and pull test drinks until the extraction is back in range.
Grinder jammed by a foreign object. A small stone or a scrap of packaging in the beans can jam the grinder and stop the machine with an error. We clear the jam, check the burrs and the motor for damage, and replace whatever was hurt.
Grinder motor straining or stalling. A motor that hums without turning, or turns slowly, may be worn or fighting a jammed gear. We test the motor and the gearing, replace the worn part, and confirm the grind time is back to normal.
