Usually for a while, if drinks still come out and nothing leaks. A service message generally means the machine's counter has reached its service point. If the brewer starts stalling, leaking or throwing faults, stop and book the pickup before it damages anything else.

Is it better to rebuild a WMF brewer or replace it?

It depends on the wear. If the housing and drive are sound, a rebuild with new seals is the sensible choice. If the unit is cracked or its drive is worn, replacement makes more sense. The quote tells you which, and why.

WMF in Benicia

On a WMF, the brewer unit does the heaviest mechanical work. It compresses the coffee, holds it while the water passes through, and ejects the puck, tens of thousands of times over the life of the machine. Eventually the seals harden, the unit binds, and the machine throws a brewer fault or starts leaking past the puck.

If your machine sits in one of the studios or small offices in the Arsenal Historic District, or behind a counter off First Street, we collect it and bring it to our bench. There we pull the brewer, rebuild or replace it, clean the coffee path and reset the cycle counter. Benicia's water is moderately hard and shifts with the source, so we also check the heater side for scale while the machine is open.

Common repairs we do

What we repair on the bench.

Brewer unit binding or throwing a fault. A brewer that labors, stops partway or triggers an error has usually worn its seals or dried out its moving parts. We remove it, strip it down, replace the seals and worn parts, grease it with food-safe lubricant and test it through repeated brew cycles.
Coffee leaking past the puck. When the brewer seal hardens, water bypasses the coffee and runs into the grounds bin or the drip tray, and drinks come out thin. We replace the seal set, check the piston, and confirm the result through a run of test drinks.
Cycle counter reset after a brewer rebuild. Once the brewer is rebuilt we reset the counter so the machine's service reminder starts fresh. We also note the cup count on the quote, which gives you a rough idea of when the next rebuild will be due.
