Portola Valley has almost no commercial inventory beyond its small town center, so an Astoria machine here is nearly always a private one, set into a custom home's kitchen off Alpine Road or Portola Road because the owner wants real espresso for weekend guests without relying on a countertop machine that cannot keep up. A Plus 4 You or a Storm plumbed into the kitchen does that job the way a cafe machine would, just for a smaller crowd.

From San Ramon the drive is 50 to 60 minutes down I-680 and across on CA-92 or I-280. We carry the common Astoria wear parts on the van, since a property this far into the hills does not benefit from a second trip for a part we could have brought the first time.

Common repairs we do

What we repair on the bench.

Brew and steam solenoids. A solenoid that sticks open or quits responding leaves a group dead or a steam wand that will not fire, usually noticed right when the machine is asked to keep up with a full house of guests instead of one morning cup.
Group gaskets and screens. Properties on well water along the outer roads here see faster gasket wear and screen clogging than city water would cause, even on a machine that only runs on weekends. We replace the group gasket and dispersion screen and pull a clean test shot before calling it done.
Heating element and level probe. A boiler that recovers slowly or overfills usually comes down to scale on the heating element and the level probe, especially on a machine used in bursts rather than steadily. We descale the boiler, check the probe, and replace the element if it has already failed.
Pump and motor. Weak brew pressure or a noisy pump on a Plus 4 You or Storm points to the rotary pump or its motor nearly every time. We set the pressure back to spec and replace the pump when adjustment will not hold anymore.
