We come from San Ramon, about 50 to 55 minutes over the San Mateo Bridge, and yes, early slots before open are how we prefer to do cafe work. We route Burlingame with our other Mid-Peninsula stops, including Hillsborough, so a first-appointment arrival is realistic most days of the week, all seven.

Can you put us on a maintenance schedule instead of waiting for failures?

Yes, and for a machine drinking Peninsula water it pays for itself. We set an interval for gasket and screen changes, boiler checks, and descaling based on your volume. Machines we maintain almost never make the emergency call list.

Astoria machines come out of the CMA group in Italy, and they are a natural fit for the cafe and bakery scene on and around Broadway in Burlingame. The Plus 4 You and Core600 are the ones I see most on Peninsula bar tops, with the occasional Storm in a higher-volume shop and Hybrids in newer builds. They are honest mid-market commercial machines, and they respond well to regular service.

Peninsula water is the enemy here. Scale builds in the boiler and heat exchangers, group solenoids stick, and flow meters drift, and a machine pulling shots from morning commute traffic near the BART station accumulates cycles fast.

We schedule seven days because cafe equipment does not fail on a convenient day.

Common repairs we do

What we repair on the bench.

Group solenoid valves sticking and dripping. On the Plus 4 You and Core600 the three-way group solenoids scale up and start weeping into the drip tray or refusing to release pressure after a shot. Baristas notice sneezing pucks and inconsistent extraction. I rebuild or replace the solenoid, descale the group circuit, and check the gicleur while the group is open.
Volumetric dosing drift from a fouled flow meter. When programmed doses start running long or short on one group, the flow meter turbine is usually coated in scale or debris. On a volumetric Astoria this shows up as shots that no longer match between groups. I clean or replace the meter and reprogram doses against a scale, so your recipes hold.
Heating element and pressurestat failures from scale. A Storm or Plus 4 You that is slow to recover steam pressure, or trips its safety thermostat, usually has a scaled element or a tired pressurestat. I test element resistance, verify the pressurestat differential, and descale the boiler properly rather than just swapping parts onto a dirty system.
