Common issues we see
What breaks. What we fix.
Astoria machines come out of the CMA group in Italy, built for cafes and mid-market commercial work. We see the Plus 4 You, Storm, Core600, Hybrid, and Tanya on bar tops across the Bay Area. They run on a plumbed water line, so the water feeding the machine drives most of what eventually breaks. Good news for the operator: parts are available and the build is honest, so these are worth repairing rather than tossing.
The brew and steam solenoids are the first things to act up. A solenoid that sticks or fails leaves you with a group that won’t dose or a steam wand that drips or won’t shut. We test the coil, check the valve for scale, and swap the part. Group gaskets and screens wear with every shot. A blown group gasket shows up as water spraying past the portafilter, and a clogged screen kills extraction. We pull the group, replace the gasket and dispersion screen, and clean the seat.
Heating problems usually trace back to the element or the level probe. A scaled or burnt element won’t hold temperature, and a fouled level probe makes the boiler over or underfill. Both are common on machines fed hard, unfiltered water. Pump and motor faults give you weak pressure or no flow, and we test pressure before condemning a pump. Control board issues, dead displays, dropped functions, no response on a button, we diagnose against the wiring before throwing parts at it.
Repair and maintenance
For a commercial operator, scale is the enemy. Regular descaling, backflushing the group head, and replacing group gaskets and screens on a schedule keep extraction consistent and the boiler healthy. A proper water filter on the supply line is the single best thing you can do for an Astoria. Soft, filtered water means the element, the solenoids, and the probe all last longer. We service the group head, check the seals, and confirm boiler pressure while we’re in there.
Staying ahead of scale is cheaper than a breakdown. A descale and a gasket set is a small bill. A boiler that fails mid-shift, or an element that burns out during a Saturday rush, costs you the part plus the lost service. We can set up a maintenance interval that fits your volume. We’re an independent shop, not factory authorized for Astoria, and we service them honestly. Licensed CSLB #1136642 for the electrical and water-line work.
