The brew unit is the hardest-working part of a Schaerer. It takes the dose, compresses it, brews and ejects the puck for every cup, and its seals, pistons and drive gear wear a little with each cycle. When it starts leaving grounds in the cup, pouring weak coffee, or stalling partway through a brew, the unit is due for a rebuild.

Hercules is on EBMUD water, soft to moderate, so scale builds slowly and worn parts are where we start. We pick up from the Waterfront District around the historic old town and from the rest of Hercules along Refugio Valley Road and San Pablo Avenue. On the bench we pull the brew unit, measure its wear, and write the quote before we rebuild anything.

Grounds in the cup and wet, broken pucks. Worn seals on the brew unit let coffee slip past the piston, and the ejected puck comes out soggy and crumbled. We replace the seals and the sieve, clean the unit, and check that the puck comes out firm before the machine goes back.
Brew unit that stalls or grinds as it moves. A binding brew unit loads its drive gear and motor on every cycle. Left alone, it can strip the gear or burn out the motor. We free and rebuild the unit and inspect the gear and motor for damage while everything is apart.
Weak coffee after a long run of cups. When the brew unit no longer seals under pressure, water finds a way around the coffee instead of through it. We rebuild the unit with new seals and then test the extraction against your recipe on the bench.
