Schaerer in Benicia
Schaerer commercial service.
In a Schaerer the grinder sets the dose, and the dose sets the cup. As the burrs dull, the grind drifts coarse, the dose drops, and the machine starts reporting under-extraction or pouring thin coffee that nobody can quite explain. Because the machine keeps pouring, the drift is easy to live with until the cup is plainly weak.
We pick up from the studios and small professional offices in the Arsenal Historic District, from First Street and the waterfront downtown, and from the rest of Benicia. The city's water is moderately hard and changes with its source, so we look at the boiler and valves while the machine is open. The bench work covers the grinder, the brew unit and the water side, and the quote is written before any repair.
$150–450 deposit depending on the model. It covers pickup, bench diagnosis and return, and is not credited toward the repair. Bench diagnosis can take up to one week; most repairs take 3–4 weeks. Same-day pickup may be available, but same-day repair is not offered. 6 months on parts and labor; 90 days on consumables.
Common repairs we do
What we repair on the bench.
- Dull burrs and a dose that has drifted light. Burrs wear with every kilo of beans they grind. We weigh the actual dose against the recipe, replace worn burrs, and recalibrate the grinder so the machine delivers what the menu calls for.
- Under-extraction faults on the display. When the brew unit meets too little resistance, the machine flags under-extraction. The cause can be a coarse grind, a light dose, or a brew unit that no longer compresses the coffee properly. We test each one and fix the part at fault.
- Grinder stopped by a stone or a clump of old beans. A small stone in the beans, or a lump of stale, oily coffee, can jam the grinder outright. We clear the chamber, check the burrs and motor for damage, and clean the hopper before the grinder goes back together.

FAQ
Schaerer in Benicia questions, answered.
-
Our Benicia office makes only a few dozen cups a day. Does the grinder still wear?
Yes, just more slowly. Burrs dull by the weight of coffee ground, not by the calendar. A low-volume machine can go a long time between burr changes, but the dose should still be checked at each maintenance so the drift does not creep up on you. -
Benicia's water changes with the source. Does that matter for a plumbed Schaerer?
It does. A filter sized for one hardness runs out sooner when the blend turns harder. Test the water a few times a year and change the cartridge on the shorter interval. The boiler and valves are where the difference shows first. -
Our studio is in the Arsenal and we are not always in. Can someone else hand the machine over?
Yes. Tell us who will be there, where the machine sits and which door to use. Close and disconnect the water line, empty the grounds and drip tray, and run the milk cleaning cycle before it leaves. -
What does the Schaerer pickup deposit cover?
$150–450 deposit depending on the model. It covers pickup, bench diagnosis and return, and is not credited toward the repair. -
