From San Ramon we run about 50 to 60 minutes down 680 and over on 280 to reach Portola Valley. Valves, gaskets, and descaling gear travel with us on the truck, so the usual faults get handled on that first stop, which counts for more once you factor in the drive back out to the outer roads.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Brew and steam solenoid valves. A stuck or leaking solenoid shows up as a dribbling Classe group or lost steam pressure, and it's something I see more often on the well-water side of town. I test the coil and seat, put in a new valve, and flush the line clean.
- Group gaskets and screens. A failed portafilter seal will spray around the group, and a screen that's clogged just shuts off flow. The fix is a new gasket and dispersion screen with extraction reset on the Classe head.
- Descaling and gicleur clogs. Well water on the outer roads carries a different mineral load than the municipal supply on the valley floor, and it plugs the gicleur and starves the group faster. We flush scale from the boiler and lines and see if the property could use a filter change.
- Heating element and level sensor. When the heating element quits or the level probe fouls, temperature and water fill go out of whack. We check the element with a meter, service or swap the probe, and make sure the boiler holds steady.
