Common issues we see
What breaks. What we fix.
Rancilio machines hold up well in a busy cafe, but they run on a plumbed water line, so scale does most of the damage we see. The Classe 5, Classe 7, Classe 9, and Classe 11 are the workhorses behind specialty bars across the East Bay, and every one of them comes to us with the same short list of problems. Catch them early and the fix is cheap. Wait, and a clogged gicleur turns into a dead group.
Solenoid valves are the first thing to go. Brew and steam solenoids stick or leak after scale builds up on the seats, so you get a group that dribbles, a steam wand that won’t shut off clean, or a portafilter that drips between shots. We pull the valve, clean or replace the coil and seat, and verify it seats dry. Group gaskets and screens wear on the same schedule. A blown-out shot or coffee creeping past the portafilter usually means the group gasket is hardened, and a flat, channeling extraction points at a scaled or worn screen. Both are quick swaps.
The boiler side is where neglected water shows up. Heating elements scale over and either trip the thermal or read low, and the level sensor (probe) fouls so the boiler over- or under-fills. We descale, check the probe, and test the element under load before we call it. Gicleur clogs from scale are common on these too, and that’s a straight cleaning if you catch it.
Pumps, motors, and control boards round out the list. A weak or noisy rotary pump kills your brew pressure, and we test pressure at the group before we condemn anything. Board faults are less frequent, but we diagnose them properly instead of throwing parts at the machine. Rancilio parts are widely available and fairly priced, so these are worth repairing rather than replacing.
Repair and maintenance
If you run a Rancilio commercial machine, descaling and water filtration are the whole game. A good filter on the inlet line and a regular descale keep scale off the boiler, the element, the solenoid seats, and the gicleurs. That is most of your failure list, gone. Group gaskets and screens are wear items, so plan to change them on a schedule, not when a shot starts channeling.
Staying ahead of scale is cheaper than a breakdown. A filter and a descale cost a fraction of a heating element or a seized pump, and they don’t shut your bar down mid-service. We handle the water-line and electrical side under CSLB #1136642. We are an independent shop, not factory-authorized for Rancilio, and we service these machines straight.
San Ramon is our home base, and we cover the surrounding commercial districts. The diagnostic is $75, waived with the repair, and you get a written quote before any work. Call ADRIUM.
