DCS in San Pablo

DCS in San Pablo kitchens.

More of San Pablo's houses were built from the 1940s through the 1960s than in any other era, so a DCS range in one of them is the newest thing on an old gas line. The house may still have its original shutoff valve behind the range, one nobody has turned in decades. We check that it closes before we disconnect anything, because a range repair should not end with a leaking valve.

The oven side of an RGS gets less attention than the burners until it acts up. A convection fan that grinds, an oven running well off the dial, or a bake burner that will not light each have their own cause, and we test before we order. San Pablo calls go to our technician, who is based in Benicia. Your $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you approve the work, and the quote is always in writing.

Common repairs we handle.

  • Convection fan grinding or not spinning. A worn convection motor bearing grinds, then slows, and the oven bakes unevenly from front to back. We check the fan blade for rubbing, test the motor, and replace it if the bearing has gone. Then we run a convection bake to confirm even heat.
  • Oven running hot or cool against the dial. We check the oven thermostat against a calibrated thermometer through a full bake. A thermostat that is slightly off can often be recalibrated; one that swings widely or cannot hold a temperature gets replaced.
  • Old gas shutoff that will not close. Before a range is disconnected, its shutoff has to hold. On an older valve that has not moved in years, the handle may not turn or the valve may not seal. If it fails, we stop, explain, and add a new valve to the written quote before going further.

FAQ

DCS in San Pablo questions, answered.

  • Our DCS oven bakes unevenly and the fan sounds rough. Is that one problem or two?
Often one. A convection motor losing its bearing spins slower, and the oven loses the air movement that evens out the heat. We test the motor and the thermostat separately, so you only pay for the part that caused it.
  • We notice a faint gas smell near the range, but only when the oven is on. What should we do?
Faint or strong, leave the oven and the valve alone, get out of the house and call 911 and PG&E at 1-800-743-5000 from a safe distance. Once it's been made safe, we find the source with a leak detector and repair the fitting or valve that is leaking.
  • Is a 20-year-old DCS range in our San Pablo East house worth fixing?
Usually. The RGS is a pro-grade gas range built to be serviced, and parts still come through Fisher & Paykel. Replacing it also means matching the opening and the gas hookup. We quote the repair in writing and say so plainly if the numbers do not make sense.
