DCS in Hercules

DCS in Hercules kitchens.

Hercules is mostly two-story homes: the 1970s and 1980s subdivisions inland along Refugio Valley Road, and newer neighborhoods such as Olympian Hills, Village Park and Victoria by the Bay closer to the water. A DCS range in any of them is most likely a remodel choice, and an RGS in the 36 or 48-inch width may carry a grill or griddle module in the cooktop. Those modules have their own igniters and thermal valves, separate from the burners beside them.

When a module runs but never gets hot enough, the cause is air mix, the orifice or thermostat calibration, and we test each in that order. Hercules is covered by our technician based in Benicia. A $99 diagnostic starts the visit and is credited toward the repair if you go ahead. We write the quote before we start, and our gas work is licensed under CSLB #1136642.

Common repairs we handle.

  • Griddle module that stays cold. A griddle that will not heat while the burners work fine usually has a weak igniter or a thermal valve stuck closed. We test the igniter's current draw, check the valve, replace whichever one failed, and run the griddle up to temperature.
  • Grill module lighting but never getting hot enough to sear. We look at the air shutter, the orifice size and the thermostat calibration. A shutter knocked out of position during cleaning, or a wrong orifice left from a fuel change, is the easy fix. A drifting thermostat gets recalibrated or replaced.
  • Grease packed under the grill module. Grease that collects in the module tray and under the grate smokes, flares and fouls the igniter. We clean the tray and the burner, check the igniter tip and nearby wiring for heat damage, and show you how the tray comes out for regular cleaning.

FAQ

DCS in Hercules questions, answered.

  • Our Victoria by the Bay kitchen has a 48-inch RGS with a griddle. Can you fix just the griddle?
Yes. The griddle has its own igniter and thermal valve, and we work on it without disturbing the rest of the cooktop. If the burners have problems too, we list them separately on the written quote so you decide what gets done.
  • We live in the Trees and Flowers and our DCS oven takes ages to light. What is failing?
The bake glow-bar igniter is the first suspect. It can keep glowing while drawing too little current to open the oven safety valve. We measure the current, check the valve, and replace the igniter if it has weakened.
  • Is it safe to keep using the range while we wait for a part?
It depends on the fault. A weak griddle igniter only takes the griddle out of service. A flame rolling out of a burner or a valve that will not shut off fully means closing the gas to the range until it is fixed. A gas smell means leaving the house and calling 911 and PG&E at 1-800-743-5000 from a safe distance. We tell you which case you have before we leave.
