Turbo Air in Millbrae

Turbo Air commercial service.

Turbo Air earns its keep in Millbrae's food businesses the same way True does, as a workhorse that shrugs off daily abuse. We see their reach-ins and prep tables in the Broadway kitchens and their glass-door merchandisers in the markets and boba shops between the station and El Camino. Solid units, and almost always worth repairing when they act up.

Turbo Air has one brand-specific weakness worth naming: evaporator coil corrosion. The uncoated coils on some model years pit and leak refrigerant years before the rest of the box is tired. Caught early, that is a repairable leak or a coil replacement into a cabinet with plenty of life left. I am EPA 608 Universal certified, so leak detection, coil work, and recharge are all in-house, no subcontractor.

Commercial calls get priority dispatch seven days a week, quotes come in writing, and the $75 diagnostic is waived with repair.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Evaporator coil corrosion leaks. The box gradually loses capacity over weeks, runs longer, and finally cannot hold 38. On Turbo Air the first suspect is the evaporator coil pitting from cleaning chemicals and acidic food vapor. I leak-test electronically, and if the coil is pitted I quote a replacement coil with recharge rather than a doomed top-off.
  • Self-cleaning condenser mechanism jammed. The rotating brush that is supposed to keep the condenser clear can jam with heavy kitchen grease, and then it holds debris against the coil instead of sweeping it. I free or replace the mechanism, deep-clean the coil behind it, and verify amp draw so the compressor is not still running against high head pressure.
  • Controller and thermistor faults on M3 series. The digital controller flashes error codes or the display reads a temperature the thermometer in the box disagrees with. Thermistors drift, and connectors corrode in humid kitchens. I test sensor resistance against a chart, replace the failed sensor, and only condemn the control board when the measurements actually convict it.

FAQ

Turbo Air in Millbrae questions, answered.

  • We run a market near Millbrae station and the Turbo Air merchandiser is warm. How fast can San Ramon-based help arrive?
Figure 50 minutes of driving over the San Mateo Bridge, and Millbrae is already on our regular Mid-Peninsula loop with Hillsborough. Warm commercial boxes with stock inside move to the front of that day's route. Same-day service is realistic on most weekdays if you call before mid-afternoon.
  • The unit is out of warranty and leaking refrigerant. Repair or replace?
Depends on where it leaks. A pitted evaporator coil is a defined repair with a known price, and on a cabinet under ten years old it usually wins the math easily. A leak in the buried portion of the system changes the answer. The diagnostic settles it, and you get both numbers in writing before deciding.
  • Can staff do anything to make the Turbo Air last longer?
Two things. Keep the condenser area clear and brushed monthly even though the self-cleaning brush exists, and stop cleaning the interior with bleach or acid products, which is what eats the evaporator coil. Mild detergent inside, dry cloth on the gaskets. That alone adds years.
