Turbo Air in East Palo Alto

Turbo Air commercial service.

East Palo Alto runs a different commercial mix than the Peninsula cities around it. University Avenue and Bay Road carry small markets, taquerias, and produce stands, and a lot of them are running Turbo Air glass-door merchandisers and reach-ins for years past when a bigger operation would have already swapped them out. Turbo Air rewards that kind of use better than most commercial lines, since parts stay available and the compressors are straightforward to service.

We now cover East Palo Alto with a technician based on the Peninsula in San Mateo County, so a call here isn't waiting on a long drive from San Ramon. The work runs through Bay Area Refrigeration Service, our commercial refrigeration division, and I hold EPA Section 608 certification for handling the refrigerant in these units properly.

I know a lot of small operators here are watching every dollar on equipment, so I give a written quote before touching anything and I'm honest when a repair isn't worth it. CSLB #1136642, and the $99 diagnostic is waived once you approve the work.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Condenser fan motors on merchandisers run around the clock. A market cooler on University Avenue rarely gets shut off, and the condenser fan motor logs a lot more hours than the same unit would in a restaurant that closes overnight. In a dusty back room, that motor wears out faster still. I clean the coil, replace the motor, and check that the unit has room to actually breathe behind the case.
  • Door gasket failure on well-used glass-door units. A merchandiser that's been opened and closed thousands of times a year eventually loses its seal at the hinge corner first, then along the whole gasket. Warm air creeping in makes the compressor run nearly nonstop trying to hold temperature on product that customers are looking at through the glass. New gasket in the factory profile and a hinge check usually fixes it outright.
  • Sensor drift on units past their original service life. On an older Turbo Air unit, the original thermistor has been reading temperature for years and starts drifting from what's actually happening inside the box. Nobody finds out until product spoils. I verify true cabinet temperature with a calibrated probe and replace the sensor, which is usually a lot cheaper than people fear when they hear the unit is old.

FAQ

Turbo Air in East Palo Alto questions, answered.

  • How fast can you get to University Avenue if our cooler goes down?
Our technician covering this area is based on the Peninsula in San Mateo County, so East Palo Alto is a short trip, not a long haul across the bay from San Ramon. How soon depends on where he is that day, but you're not waiting behind a two-hour drive to even start.
  • Our unit is older and used. Is it even worth calling you instead of just replacing it?
Almost always worth a call first. Fan motors, gaskets, and sensors are inexpensive repairs regardless of the unit's age, and Turbo Air parts stay easy to source. The only time I steer someone toward replacement is a failed compressor on a unit that's already had other major work, and I'll tell you straight if that's what I'm looking at.
  • What does the diagnostic cost and can we get a written quote?
The diagnostic is $99, waived if you approve the repair. You always get a written quote before I do any work, so there's no surprise number at the end.
